5 common causes of workplace knee injuries

On Behalf of | Dec 18, 2024 | Workplace Risks

If you’re “over a certain age” you probably already have a pretty good idea about just how easily a knee injury can sideline you – and they’re distressingly common in many workplaces.

Understanding some of the most common causes of knee injuries can help you avoid future problems (and potentially debilitating injuries). Some of the biggest culprits include:

1. Prolonged stress

If your job regularly requires you to kneel, squat or bend for prolonged periods, that can put significant stress on your knee joint, leading to overuse injuries like bursitis, tendinitis and tendinosis.

2. Repetitive motions

Whether it’s walking back and forth over a concrete floor, climbing stairs or ladders or doing anything else that requires you to make repetitive use of your knee joints, you can end up with significant knee pain.

3. Heavy lifting

If your job requires you to lift and carry heavy loads on a regular basis, that can cause serious strain on the ligaments and tendons surrounding your knee joint.

4. Sudden movements

A sudden twist of your knee can lead to severe injuries, such as meniscal tears, torn tendons or even dislocated kneecaps.

5. Slips and falls

A fall on a tile or concrete floor can be devastating if you land on your knees. The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) can easily be torn – or you could end up with a broken kneecap.

A knee injury can leave you unable to perform your normal work activities for weeks or months while you heal – and longer still if you happen to require surgery. If you’ve suffered a knee injury while working and find it difficult to obtain the workers’ compensation benefits you are due, it may be time to seek legal guidance.
